DSCEJ's HBCU Environmental Justice and Climate Corps Internship program

May 3 is the application deadline for the HBCU Environmental Justice and Climate Corps Internship program. This program from the Deep South Center for Environmental Justice (DSCEJ) provides five interns with an opportunity to work on a research-to-action project with a community-based organization in the following cities: New Orleans, LA; Baton Rouge, LA; Gulfport, MS; Mobile, AL; and Pensacola, FL.

Interns will conduct research in one of the following areas: Environmental Justice, Climate Change, Food Security, Environmental Health Disparities, and Environmental Policy

This is a paid internship opportunity and interns will receive $3,000. Applicants should have a passionate interest in environmental justice and climate change advocacy, be attending a Historically Black College and University (HBCU), and be a rising undergraduate Junior or above (including graduate student).

Key dates:

  • May 3, 2024: Application Deadline

  • June 10, 2024: Internship Begins

  • Aug. 9, 2024: Last Day of Summer Internship

New Sustainability Fellowships Available at University of Virginia

U VA Sustainability Fellowships

This fellowship program offers two full-time, benefitted project management and support positions in UVA’s Office for Sustainability that focus on achievement of the University’s sustainability goals.

These are 1 year roles that are designed to equip professionals interested in sustainability careers with relevant knowledge, skills, experience, and connections. The two fellowships are:

Zero Waste Fellow ~ Duties may include:

  • Lead zero waste event strategy and execution: including program promotion, trainings, on-site support, volunteer coordination, liaising with UVA Recycling Department, coordinating with area caterers, piloting new resources as needed, and general process/program improvement.

  • Perform waste audits and assist with special collection campaigns including cardboard at move-in, donations at move-out, and Green Games for major athletic events.

Sustainable Healthcare Fellow ~ Duties may include:

  • Leading clinician and medical student engagement strategy and execution; including presentations, tabling, events, listserv management, communications, possibly facilitating a working group, and general program improvement.

  • Researching and sharing best practices from other institutions and Practice Greenhealth.

  • Supporting and leading new recycling infrastructure site visits, surveys, education, presentations, and rollouts in UVA Medical Center facilities in collaboration with Fellowship Supervisor and Medical Center Environmental Services.

Applicants should have a Bachelor’s degree by the start of the fellowship. Compensation is $39,520 annually with benefits. The fellowship term will be June 3, 2024 - May 30, 2025.

776 Fellowship

The application deadline is April 24 for the next cohort of the 776 Fellowship. This program gives 20 people between ages 18 and 24 a total of $100,000 to spend two years working on an idea they have to address climate change.

As the urgency to address climate change intensifies, this symposium serves as a platform for interdisciplinary discussions, innovative solutions, and collective mindfulness towards sustainable practices and individual behavior change. ​

​The day-long symposium will bring together leading academics, community leaders and activists, practitioners of mindfulness, and monastics who studied under Thich Nhat Hanh.
